SATCULT

Vocational Training Closing the Knowledge Gap on Satellite-based Services for Cultural Heritage Preservation

In the protection of cultural heritage, it is time to reach for the stars by making use of satellite data and Earth observation.

The European SATCULT project was implemented December 2024 to May 2026, laying the foundations for this. It was an invitation to all experts and practitioners from the cultural heritage sector and from Earth observation to familiarise themselves with new interdisciplinary possibilities in the protection of cultural heritage and in new cooperation and business fields. Although the project has officially come to an end, the project partners and the community that has formed as a result are keen to see it continue.

Three European institutions prepared innovative vocational training programmes on the use of satellite data for the protection of Europe’s cultural heritage. Expertise in cultural heritage protection and geoinformation data was combined in response to the challenges caused by climate change and war destruction. The aim was to raise awareness of the beneficial opportunities for cooperation in both areas.

The outcome of the SATCULT surveys for cultural heritage managers and geoinformation experts is published! This marked the first time that the needs of cultural heritage practitioners and geoinformation professionals were identified for interdisciplinary training courses on the use of satellite data in cultural heritage protection. Have a look at the full report (in English), or the summaries of the Report (in English and German).

The SATCULT brochure with 12 Good Practices in the use of Earth observation and satellite data is published in English, German, and Greek. Have a look and enjoy the reading!

The SATCULT Heidelberg Whitepaper is aimed at officials in politics (e.g. members of committees dealing with cultural heritage protection and related fields), decision-makers in the fields of cultural heritage protection and geoinformation, and training institutions in both fields. It articulates seven demands.
