SATCULT online workshop May 6th, 2026

On May 6th, 2026, Italian SATCULT partner CNR – Institute of Heritage Science (ISPC) offered a half-day online workshop for European cultural heritage practitioners and geoinformation experts on the outcomes of the SATCULT project. SATCULT colleagues Nicodemo Abate, Nicola Masini, Dante Abate, Maria Cristina Salvi, and coordinator Karin Drda-Kühn presented the outcomes and answered the numerous questions of the participants. An analysis of the SATCULT survey on requirements for using satellite data in cultural heritage protection was met with a great deal of interest. This analysis was specifically welcomed by the 51 participants of the workshop as it set out – for the first time – the conditions under which interdisciplinary training on the use of Earth observation and satellite data in the protection of cultural heritage could take place.

Four outstanding speakers with extensive and long-standing experience presented good practice examples and shared their experiences in the implementations of projects:

  • Rosa Lasaponara (CNR-IMAA): „SAR for Cultural Heritage: Advanced Earth Observation for Knowledge, Analysis and Safeguarding
  • Michele Antonicelli (Planetek): „Satellite-Based Monitoring for the Protection of Cultural and Historical Heritage
  • Angelo R. Donvito (Digita Srl): „From Space to IoT: Integrated Monitoring for Cultural and Natural Heritage
  • Betty Charalampopoulou (Geosystems Hellas S.A.): „The Use of EO and AI under the Initiative of the Green Cluster for Cultural Heritage

The participants took an active part in the lively discussions and expressed their expectations concerning a broader use of satellite data applications in the cultural heritage sector.
